HYPNOPOMPIA
Transition between sleep and awake.
Seven Drawings on gold foil engraving board, using unstaged/documentary photography of subjects the very second they wake from sleep.
My attempt was to capture that very moment of confusion when you are not asleep but not fully awake.
I also made a short video which you can see here : http://www.woolgatherartprize.com/claire-holyoake/

The Art of Letter Writing and is it lost to Modern Technology?
I have recycled lots of different things and made my own paper, on this paper I have written (with dip pen and ink) 40 letters to randomly picked strangers from the Leeds phone book, included a stamped addressed envelope in each (all of which were hand made. I sealed each letter with a personal wax stamp and now I eagerly wait the replies (if any) I LIVE IN HOPE.
I am hoping to receive photographs so that I can send each person a hand drawn portrait of themselves.
I learnt a lot from this project one of which was that the local phone books are really out of date. I had a few angry replies from family members of people who had sadly passed away (which was very upsetting as I never wanted to cause upset only good intentions) and some from people willing to chat through letters but not send photo’s. I had one reply from a man who sent a photo which I drew (posted above) a portrait for him and posted it back.
It made me think how suspicious the world has become even when you try to reach out to people and I feel that this should change.
Everyone should write a letter to people they care about, make the effort to show you care with a handmade fun package to show you care as typed words are easy to type but time and effort are hard to pull off in this busy modern world.
